Opened in 2009 as a meeting point for the people, goods and happenings of Osaka, the city of water, this is the first permanent river station in Kansai. It has a restaurant, an information base for waterside activities such as SUP and Nordic walking, and a ticket counter for sightseeing boats. The Okawa river runs in front of Kawa-no-Eki Hachikenya, and the open waterside space in the middle of the city changes with the seasons: cherry blossom in spring, the Tenjin Matsuri festival in summer, autumn leaves, and illuminations in winter.

Sumitomo Kichizaemon Tomoito, the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, donated the solid library building and the funds for it, and the present prefectural Nakanoshima Library was completed with an extension in Taisho 11. It holds around 500,000 items.

A sewage treatment plant that discharges into the Daini Neyagawa river. Rows of cherry trees spread across the site, and it is a favourite spot for blossom viewing. A new treatment process using the membrane bioreactor method (MBR) was introduced, and Nakahama Seseragi no Sato reopened in March of Reiwa 4 (2022). With the cherry, the plant's symbol tree, along with hydrangeas and azaleas, it is a place to relax, full of flowers and greenery.

The Shirokitagawa is a 5.6 km artificial waterway linking the Neyagawa river and the old Yodogawa river (the Okawa), and was formerly the Shirokita Canal. Improvement work has gone on, and year by year more is added as a place for city residents to relax: fishing spots, the Waterfall Plaza, the Water and Sculpture Plaza, and a promenade for jogging and walking.

The remains of a moat in Kumata Park. The details are unknown, but it is thought to have been dug in the Sengoku period for defence, irrigation and drainage, or as a flood retention pond. Hirano was a hub of land and water transport, and there was a boat basin near the Kohoneike-guchi entrance, busy with the Kashiwara boats that went up and down the Hiranogawa river.

A wando is a pool of standing water alongside the main channel of the Yodogawa river, either joined to the main channel or joined to it when the water rises. The origin of the word is not clear, but in some regions an inlet, a still stretch of river or a deep pool is called a wando, and the name came to be used on the Yodogawa as well. It is an environment particular to the Yodogawa and valuable nationwide, a treasury of nature supporting a varied ecosystem, with freshwater fish such as the itasenpara, which in Showa 49 (1974) was the first fish to be designated a national natural monument. Registered as an Osaka City townscape resource in Heisei 22 (2010).
城北公園

Shirokita Park (about 9.5 ha) opened in Showa 9 (1934) and has flowers through the year, including cherry, Japanese iris and plum. Underneath it is an earthquake resistant tank for drinking water holding 400 tonnes, enough for about 44,000 people if each uses 3 litres a day, which makes it valuable for disaster preparedness too. Registered as an Osaka City townscape resource in Heisei 22 (2010).

The Shirokitagawa river links the Neyagawa river and the Okawa river over 5.6 km, with promenades along both banks that make a place to relax close to the water. Many local residents use the promenade for walking and jogging. On the right bank stand fine old trees decades old, such as Japanese bead trees and elms, while the left bank runs under a tunnel of green, making it an ideal walking route.

Opened in Showa 39 (1964), Shirokita Iris Garden was the first stroll style iris garden in the Kansai region. It stands in Shirokita Park, which was laid out on the riverbed of the old Yodogawa left vacant by the Meiji era works that rerouted the river. It covers about 1.3 ha, with around 13,000 plants of about 250 varieties of Japanese iris, the ward's flower. During the opening season from mid May to mid June many people come, from inside the ward and beyond.

The course runs beside the Shirokita Canal, completed in Showa 15 (1940), where you have nature in the green of the street trees and the surface of the water, and art in the sculptures. There are few traffic lights along it, and many people use it for walking and jogging, which helps keep local residents healthy.

The Akagawa iron bridge, properly called the Yodogawa Bridge, is an old truss bridge dating from before the war and was an unusual bridge that both people and trains could cross, but the Akagawa temporary bridge, the footway part, was closed on 31 October of Heisei 25. The Osaka Higashi Line runs there now.

平太の渡し跡碑

A monument to the ferry that linked Toyosato in Higashiyodogawa ward with Taishibashi in Asahi ward. The landing disappeared when Toyosato Ohashi bridge opened in Showa 45 (1970). The Heita of the stone is said to come from Sawada Saheita, a local landholder of Minamidaido village who ran a large ferry business under licence from the Osaka town magistrate, though people generally call it Hirata, which is the place name.
旧清水小学校跡の案内板

The site of Shimizu Elementary School, founded in Taisho 11 when it split from its parent school, Senbayashi Jinjo Kotoshogakko. It was a familiar place for more than thirty years, until the school moved to its present site in Shimizu 5-chome. The waterway on the south side of the school was the main channel of Shimizu village, busy with traffic for people going to and from the fields, and also used to water the paddy fields.

An unusual Jizo that people pour sake over instead of water. Asahi Jizoson is said to love sake and to drink up everything poured on its head. There is even a notice asking people not to pour anything but sake on the Jizo. Its nose is said to be chipped because it was struck by a sculling oar. It is also said to work against toothache, and there is a custom of offering sake.

The official name of the Enogawa is the Hikan Toitsu Suiro, the unified sluice channel. Sluice gates and pipes were set in the embankment of the Yodogawa to draw water for irrigating the fields, but for the safety of the embankment the eight intakes were combined, a new joint sluice gate was built at Ikaga in Hirakata city, and the unified channel was completed in Showa 9 (1934). Later, when an expressway was planned, the channel was fully culverted in Showa 49 (1974) and laid out as the Enogawa-suji promenade, as it is today.
江野川筋遊歩道

A promenade under the elevated Hanshin Expressway Route 12 Moriguchi Line, ideal for walking and jogging. The stretch from near Osaka Institute of Technology to Taishibashi has wooden benches and other touches that give it the warmth of timber. The Enogawa was fully culverted in Showa 49 (1974) and laid out as the Enogawa-suji promenade, about 3.5 kilometres from Tojima-cho in Moriguchi city to the Asahi Ward Civic Centre, as it is today.

Work to remake the Yodogawa took concrete shape in the second half of the Meiji 20s, after the great flood of Meiji 18 (1885), when the strongly curving river was straightened and rerouted. Partly because of the Russo-Japanese War, it was completed in Meiji 43 (1910). Related improvement work continued into the late Taisho years, and the flow of the Yodogawa shifted well north of this spot to its present course.
菅原城北大橋

Planned as part of the Toyosato-Yata city planning road project, this bridge links Nakamiya in Asahi ward with Toyosato in Higashiyodogawa ward. It is about 1.4 km long and 21.5 m wide and was completed in June of Heisei 1 as the first toll road bridge in Osaka City. The toll for an ordinary car was 100 yen, which is why it is nicknamed the hundred yen bridge (it is now free). It is a cable stayed bridge with two towers near the middle of the river, a form chosen to sit well with the surrounding scenery of wando pools and reed beds.

Nishinamibashi Park and the Shirokitagawa promenade were laid out as one, with fountains and other features using water from the Shirokitagawa river. Completed in Heisei 15 (2003).
豊里大橋

A bridge on the Shinjo-Yamatogawa city planning road (the Osaka Inner Loop) linking Taishibashi in Asahi ward with Toyosato in Higashiyodogawa ward, 0.9 km long and 18 m wide, completed in March of Showa 45 (1970). It is nicknamed the Yajirobe Bridge. It is a cable stayed bridge, and it ties northern Osaka to the industrial belt in the east and on to Nanko port, making the road one of the city's main arteries. As a monument at the eastern gateway to Osaka, the simplicity and clarity of its form and its setting still draw many admirers, and it looks fine in the evening sun. With Sugawara Shirokita Ohashi just downstream, the two are called the married couple bridges.

Water given advanced treatment at the Hirano sewage treatment plant is released into the very top of the Imagawa river, which has been laid out as a stream people can get close to. Along about 300 m at the top, near the east side of Yuzato Elementary School, rocks and stones have been set to make a mountain stream, with small bridges and a footpath. Completed in Showa 56 (1981).

The Minatomachi end of the Dotonborigawa river is the western terminus for the pleasure boats on the water. Unlike the bustle around Ebisubashi it is quiet here, and with the sky turning blue after the sun has gone down it has real atmosphere.

You can easily walk to a night view of the office towers of Umeda from across the river, either from the Juso side or from Tsukamoto. Not many people know about it yet, so it is a view point worth passing on.

A prime spot for looking at Osaka Castle. In Taisho 14 (1925), while sand was being dredged from the Higashiyokoborigawa river, a giboshi finial was found on the riverbed carved with the words Osakabashi, Tensho 13 (1585). It was kept at the Osaka Castle keep and shown to the public, but it was lost in the confusion after the war. No documents about Osakabashi survive, so the location and size of the bridge, like the whereabouts of the finial, remain a mystery. The name Osakabashi returned after about 390 years in Showa 48 (1973), on a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians linking Kema Sakuranomiya Park with Osaka Castle Park. It was built beside Kyobashi, on the north side of Osaka Castle. Ubamegashi oak and satsuki azalea are planted on the bridge, and Osaka Castle looks beautiful from it. One of the 50 famous bridges of Naniwa.
