Suisho Bridge

Suishobashi was built in Showa 4 (1929) as a movable weir on the Dojima River, for the purpose of cleaning the river. By Showa 57 (1982), more than 50 years after it was built, dirt and damage had become noticeable, so it was refurbished and given a look worthy of the name Suishobashi, crystal bridge. The main arch combined with the nine small arches above it gives a sense of lightness within its solidity, and planting and benches on the bridge make it an unhurried space. Along the river stand groups of modern buildings that represent Osaka, such as Osaka City Central Public Hall and the prefectural Nakanoshima Library, so it is a good place for a walk. There are various explanations of the name: that the lights on the bridge reflected in the water look like the sparkle of crystal, or that it expresses a wish for the prosperity of Osaka as a city of water. By day many people can be seen drawing the bridge, and at night it is beautifully lit.
