Higo Bridge

Higo Bridge crosses the Tosabori River and links Nishi ward with Nakanoshima. On the Nakanoshima side at the north end of the bridge there was once the kurayashiki of the Higo Kumamoto domain, a warehouse that the daimyo set up in Osaka to hold their nengu rice and other goods. The Shinpan Osaka no Zu map of Meireki 3 (1657) records it as Higodono bashi. It was a wooden bridge at first but was washed away by floods, and in Meiji 21 it was replaced, together with Watanabe Bridge, by an iron bridge imported from Britain. In Taisho 15 (1926) it became a lavish concrete bridge in Spanish Renaissance style, and it has been rebuilt twice more since. The present bridge was refurbished in Heisei 6. Higo Bridge, revived again and again through changing times, is still busy with people and cars crossing it.
