Sugahara Shirokita Bridge

Sugahara Shirokita Bridge is the first cable-stayed bridge in Osaka built under a toll road scheme, completed in Heisei 1. It is known and liked as Hyakuenbashi, the hundred-yen bridge. Two towers spread the load across the cables, and the form they make is a handsome one. The stretch of the Yodogawa the bridge crosses has reed beds and wando, pond-like backwaters, that are home to the itasenpara, a fish designated a natural monument, and their conservation was taken into account when the bridge was built. Because it also passes through Shirokita Park, a great deal of study went into how it sits in the landscape.
