Hiyoshi Shrine (Osaka)

In the Bunan years of the Muromachi period, 1444 to 1448, a large Tendai temple called Sekisenji already stood here. In its grounds was a subsidiary shrine known as Sanno-gu, which held a divided spirit of Hiyoshi Taisha in Otsu. Sekisenji later burned in the fighting of the Summer Siege of Osaka, but the shrine escaped the fire and has been worshipped as the tutelary shrine of the neighbourhood. It was renamed Hiyoshi Shrine in the first year of Meiji. In 1889 the northern part of the grounds was taken for the widening of the Yodo River and the main hall was moved 200 m south, which is where it stands now. The summer grand festival in July includes rites, a procession, kagura and lion dances.
