Hotarumachi

The name Hotarumachi comes from a wish that the district would light the river with a soft glow like fireflies, and it came into being on 2 May Heisei 20 (2008). It sits in central Osaka where Umeda, Fukushima and Nakanoshima meet, yet keeps the feel of the river, and it combines three functions: culture and information in the Asahi Broadcasting head office, Dojima River Forum and ABC Hall, activity in Dojima Crosswalk, and housing in its tower blocks. The site once held the warehouse residence of the Nakatsu domain, where Fukuzawa Yukichi was born, and a monument to his birthplace stands there.
