Mandaiike Park

A park of 4.3 hectares centred on Mandai Pond, which is about 700 metres around. The record of Sumiyoshi village published in Showa 2 (1927) says that long ago a strange monster lived in Mandai Pond and troubled the people, until Prince Shotoku sent someone from Shitennoji to chant a sutra, after which the monster no longer appeared. The sutra chanted then was the Mandara sutra, so the pond was at first called Mandara Pond, and in time the name slurred into Mandaiike. The park today has playground equipment for children and is a place where residents come for radio exercises and walks. In the cherry season it fills with local blossom viewers, and in winter birdwatchers gather for the migrating birds.
