Abeno Shrine

Kitabatake Chikafusa and Kitabatake Akiie are enshrined here. The shrine stands on the old battlefield where Akiie fought the Ashikaga army, and in 1882 it took the name Abeno Shrine and was ranked as a bekkaku kanpeisha, a special imperial shrine. The present buildings were rebuilt in 1968. For the virtue the two men showed in their lifetimes, they are deeply worshipped by people of the area as gods of wisdom, courage and learning. The shrine is counted among the Kenmu Chuko Jugosha, the fifteen shrines across the country that enshrine the emperors, the princes and the many loyal retainers who worked for the Kenmu Restoration.
