Kuromon Market

Kuromon Market has fed the people of Osaka since the late Edo period, working as both a wholesale and a retail market. Along about 580 m running south from Sennichimae, some 150 shops sell fresh fish, vegetables and fruit, cooked food, clothing and more. It began around Bunsei 5 to 6 (1822-1823), when merchants gathered by the black temple gate of Enmyoji in Nipponbashi and sold fish brought in from Sakai and Kishu. Until the temple and the market burned down in the Namba fire of Meiji 45 (1912) it was called Enmyoji Market. It burned again in the air raids on Osaka and was rebuilt after the war. Because chefs from ryotei restaurants do much of their buying here, the market has many pufferfish and fresh fish shops. At the end of the year it fills with shoppers.
