About

Dotonbori, lined with huge three-dimensional signs such as the Shochikuza, Kani Doraku and the Glico sign, is the best known entertainment district of Minami in Osaka. The name comes from Yasui Doton, who put up his own fortune to dig the canal in Keicho 17 (1612). The area then flourished as a district of theatre and kabuki, and teahouses increased, which became the basis of today's district of food and live entertainment. The Shochikuza near Ebisubashi is the only theatre left that began as a playhouse, but there are comedy halls as well. Restaurants of every kind line both sides of Dotonbori-dori, busy all year round. The Tonbori River Walk, a promenade at the water's edge, also draws people, and on the roof of the Kushikatsu Daruma building a new landmark, Daruma Daijin, has been installed, built to rotate.
