Yuki Museum of Art

The museum keeps and shows the tea utensils that Yuki Teiichi, founder of the Japanese restaurant Kitcho, gathered over more than fifty years, together with vessels for the kaiseki meal served at tea and other works of art. It opened in Showa 62 (1987) in a building put up on the site of the Kitcho Hirano restaurant, reached by turning off Midosuji into Hiranomachi. Its holdings include thirteen Important Cultural Properties, among them the Ishiyama-gire and Koya-gire calligraphy fragments, brushwork by Daito Kokushi, the Kasuga Shrine mandala painting, the Chinese tea caddy known as Joo Mihotsukushi nasu, the Shino tea bowl named Hirosawa and an Oribe square-sided handled bowl, along with fine pieces mainly from the Nara period to the Edo period. Special exhibitions are held three or four times a year.
