About

The National Museum of Art, Osaka opened in 1977 in the Expo Commemoration Park, with the purpose of collecting, keeping and showing works centred on contemporary art from Japan and abroad and of carrying out research and projects connected with it. As the building aged, the museum was rebuilt and moved in 2004 to Nakanoshima in Osaka, entirely below ground. The exterior was designed around the image of the vitality of bamboo and the growth of contemporary art, the work of the Argentine-born architect Cesar Pelli. The collection numbers about 8,200 works, and exhibitions of many kinds are held.
