Tennoji Zoo

Tennoji Zoo opened on 1 January 1915 (Taisho 4) and has a long history. Its grounds of about 11 hectares keep roughly 170 species and 1,000 animals, and it is busy with visitors as an oasis in the city centre. The displays are ecological ones that reproduce the landscape of an animal's habitat as far as possible and show how it lives there: Penguin Park and Sea Lion Wharf, the reptile house IFAR, and the African Savanna Zone, home to hippos, giraffes and lions. The zoo also holds events, among them feeding and snack times when the animals can be seen eating, guinea pig observation time with a talk by the keeper in charge (first come, recommended for lower primary school age and up), a Night ZOO held for a limited period when animals can be seen as they are after dark, and events that follow the seasons.
