The first Tsutenkaku was built in July 1912 as the symbol tower of Luna Park, an amusement complex, and looked like the Eiffel Tower set on top of the Arc de Triomphe. It stood about 75 m, the tallest in the East at the time, and the name means a tall building that reaches the heavens. The first tower was damaged by fire in January 1943 and taken down, and a second Tsutenkaku was rebuilt in 1956 after a campaign by local residents. The second tower is 108 m tall including the lightning rod, and its designer was Naito Tachu, who also worked on Tokyo Tower and other buildings of the same period. A special outdoor observation deck and a tower slider have since been added.
