About

The eastern half of the site of the Fifth National Industrial Exhibition of Meiji 36 (1903) was turned into a park, which opened in Meiji 42 (1909) and so has a long history. In Showa 62 (1987) the Tennoji Exposition held that year prompted a remaking of the park around water and greenery, and it has sunken flowerbeds, a path by a stream, rose arches and much else to see. The park also holds the nagayamon gate of the former Kuroda domain warehouse residence, donated to the City of Osaka in Showa 8 (1933) and designated a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture and a historic site commemorated by the city, and a literary monument to Hayashi Fumiko carved with a passage from her work Meshi. The zoo opened in January Taisho 4 (1915) as the third zoo in Japan, and keeps about 200 species and 900 animals on grounds of roughly 11 hectares.
