Senko-ji Temple

Heaven and hell are talked about often enough. This is an unusual temple where you can see both while still alive. After taking the check that rates your degree of paradise and your degree of hell, you can go on into the hell hall, where Enma, the king of hell, receives you and lurid paintings set out what judgment each kind of sin brings. In the paradise side, the Land of the Buddhas, sand from each of the temples of the Saigoku eighty-eight sacred sites is held inside the stair handrail, and you sit under stained glass of a mandala depicting the world of the Buddhas and meditate. Coming here may change the way you live.
