Dainenbutsu-ji Temple

Dainenbutsu-ji is the head temple of the Yuzu Nenbutsu sect, and its main hall is the largest wooden building in Osaka Prefecture. Its treasures include the National Treasure Moshi Teisen Zankan and the Important Cultural Property Yuzu Nenbutsu Kanjincho, and the Hyakumanben-e held on the 16th of January, May and September, in which a giant rosary is passed from hand to hand, is well known. In the Manbu Oneri, from 1 to 5 May, a procession of costumed children, the nenbutsu chanted in joy, and songs and dances of praise lead the way into the hall. At the signal of a gong, twenty-five bodhisattvas then cross the Raigo bridge quietly, led by gagaku music, followed in turn by the principal image Juichison Tentoku Nyorai, the head of the sect and the officiating priests. A ceremony called Bosatsu Denku follows, in which the bodhisattvas offer flowers one after another while worshippers put their hands together and pray for their ancestors. The event was designated an intangible folk cultural property of the city of Osaka in 2002.
