Ohtsuki Noh Theatre

Ohtsuki Noh Theatre stands not far from Osaka Castle and has been running since before the war. It opened in 1935 as an unusual noh theatre with chair seating, at a time when box seating on matting was the norm. It is one of the few noh theatres in Kansai that escaped the fighting, and it went on staging noh afterwards. A full-size copy of the largest stone in the Osaka Castle wall forms the backdrop to the hashigakari bridgeway, and the reverberation is set to about one second in view of the musical character of noh. There are 502 fixed seats. Noh took its finished form in the Muromachi period, is called the oldest surviving stage art in the world and has been proclaimed a UNESCO intangible heritage; alongside the classical repertory, Ohtsuki also stages newly written noh to carry its appeal to later generations.
