Kamisumuji Shrine

Kamisumuji is an old shrine listed in the Engishiki, said to have been founded two thousand years ago. Its deities are Kamimusubi no Okami, Amenohiwashi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no Mikoto, and it has been worshipped since early times as the ancestral deity of brewing and of medicine. The main shrine building was burned in fighting during the Keicho era and was rebuilt in Genna 4 (1618) with the help of the Toyotomi ronin Tagaya and four others. In Genbun 1 (1736) the Tokugawa shogunate, troubled by the decay of this shrine and of Tame Shrine, ordered the official Suga Hirofusa to set up two stone monuments inscribed Kamisumuji-sha and Tame-sha on the two sites, and both still stand. The Kamisumuji-sha shrine-name stone and the Tame-sha shrine-name stone are designated cultural properties of the City of Osaka.
