Ikeda Family House

The Ikeda Family House stands at a crossroads corner on the east approach to Sumiyoshi Taisha, with a tall lantern set on the roof at the front. It has white-plastered mushiko windows, lattice openings covered in plaster, and the pillars are covered thickly in wall material like earthen walls as protection against fire. As Ikedaya Honpo, a long-established miso shop, it still works by the old method. The tall lantern on the roof and the white-plastered mushiko windows give even the exterior a sense of history. It not only still makes miso in the old way; the building is well preserved and stands along the Kumano Kaido, which calls the Edo period to mind. It is a nationally registered tangible cultural property.
