Shikinai Tatehara Shrine

Shikinai Tatehara Shrine stands near the middle of the old settlement of Kire in Hirano ward, and is a shikinaisha, a shrine listed in the Engishiki register. The main hall is a large ikkensha nagare-zukuri, one bay wide with the front slope of the roof extended. A low platform, a hamayuka, is set at the foot of the kohai, the canopy over the front, and above the kohai are a chidori-hafu dormer gable and a kara-hafu curved gable. The roof is copper-plated today but was originally cypress bark. The forms of the rainbow-beam head tie-beam, the kibana beam ends, the shrimp-shaped ebi-koryo beam and the kaerumata struts in the eaves section, and the carving applied to them, show the character of the early seventeenth century clearly, so the building can be dated to that period. The detailing is in an old manner, and the plain construction of the moya, the body of the hall, which uses little carving, is valued as a clear example of early Edo period work, of which the city has few.
