松屋町筋商店街

More than a hundred wholesalers and specialist shops stand along about a kilometre of Matsuyamachi-suji in Chuo-ku, selling hina dolls, toys, cheap sweets, washi paper and much else. Matsuyamachi is Matchamachi in the Osaka dialect, which has given it the affectionate nickname Gotchamachi, the everything town. As the nickname says, Osaka people hold that you can find anything at Matsuyamachi. Before May it fills with people buying May dolls, and when that is over the street changes again into one of fireworks, rubber rings and other summer goods. In recent years more young people have been coming to look at the old row houses left standing nearby.
