御幸通り(コリアタウン)

A shopping street between Tsuruhashi and Momodani stations on the JR loop line, where about 150 shops stand along some 300 m: Korean grocers selling kimchi and jeon, restaurants, and shops for traditional dress. Most are run by Zainichi Koreans, hangul fills the street, and this is held to be the part of Japan where Zainichi Koreans are most concentrated. In recent years local people have formed an NGO which runs kimchi-making for the middle and high school pupils who come on school trips from other regions, beginners' classes in hangul, and guided walks. The name Miyuki-dori is said to come from Miyukinomori Shrine, built at the place where Emperor Nintoku is said to have rested, a wood at what is now the western end of the shopping street, when he came in the fifth century to see how the people who had crossed over from Baekje and settled here were living.
