Yaei Shrine

Old records say that Yaei Shrine was founded in the Bunroku era (1592 to 1595), when a divided spirit was brought from Kumano Shrine, a former national shrine in Yatsuka District in Shimane Prefecture, the old Ou District of Izumo Province. From its founding it was revered as the guardian shrine of the old village of Kino, and a miyaza, an association of parishioners, carried out its rites. In 1872 it was ranked as a village shrine and given a resident priest, and the name was changed to Yaei Shrine at that time. The summer festival in July includes a procession: around the mikoshi and the horen palanquin, the parishioners' representatives, Sarutahiko, priests, shrine maidens, bugyo officials and children performing a lion dance form a line and go through every part of the shrine's district. A danjiri float parade is also held along Sokai-doro.
