Osaka Museum of Natural History

The Osaka Museum of Natural History, in a corner of Nagai Park, has five permanent displays on the natural world: nature close at hand, the history of the earth and of life, the evolution of life, the gifts of nature, and the lives of living things. Centred on the nature of Osaka, its holdings take in animals and plants from around the world, dinosaur skeletons and various rare collections, and the museum is known across Japan for the singular character of its work. The life-size reconstruction of a Naumann's elephant and the skeletons of three whales, a fin whale among them, carry real force. There are also displays where the lives of living things can be learned through games and film. Special exhibitions built on the curators' research and a museum shop of its own making are further things to see, and outdoor activities such as nature observation meetings are held actively.
