Kasuga Shrine

Kasuga Shrine is a small shrine enclosed by a green fence, on Shin-Naniwa-suji east of Tamagawa Minami Park. It was worshipped as the clan deity of the Fuji family, the village headmen of Noda, and in former days wisteria climbed the large trees and bloomed across the wide precincts. Ashikaga Yoshiakira, the second shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi are said to have come to see the wisteria. In the Edo period it was called Fuji no Miya, and the wisteria of this area became known throughout the country as Noda fuji. The deities are Amenokoyane no Mikoto, Amaterasu Omikami and Ukanomitama no Kami. The Fuji Denki, handed down in the Fuji family, says that the shrine was founded when Fujiwara no Fujitari, of a branch of the Fujiwara clan, moved here and invited the clan's ancestral deity Kasuga Myojin.
