Fukushima Tenmangu

This Tenmangu is commonly called Ue no Tenjin, and the deities enshrined include Sugawara no Michizane, Okuninushi no Mikoto and Kotoshironushi no Kami. Shrine tradition says that in 901, when Michizane was demoted to Dazaifu in Kyushu by Fujiwara no Tokihira, a villager of this place named Tokujiro comforted him on his journey. Michizane was so pleased that he gave the area, which had been called Gakijima, the name Fukushima. Later, when the villagers heard that Michizane had died in despair at Dazaifu, they built a small shrine, and that is said to be the origin.
