Yasaka Shrine

A stone lantern in the precincts is inscribed with the Tenji era of the 1120s, so the shrine is a considerably old one. It was once called Gozu Tenno-sha and was renamed Yasaka Shrine in the early Meiji period. This area was originally a sandbar at a river mouth; a village formed as the land was reclaimed, and the shrine appears to have been founded as its guardian. The miyaza rite held each December in its old form, closed to the public, is designated an intangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture. At the summer festival three danjiri floats and one makura-daiko drum go in procession, one of the seasonal sights of summer.
