Horikoshi Shrine

Horikoshi Shrine is said to have been built on Chausuyama by Prince Shotoku in the reign of the 33rd sovereign, Empress Suiko, at the same time as Shitennoji, in memory of his uncle the 32nd sovereign, Emperor Sushun. It is counted as one of the seven shrines of Shitennoji. From early times until the middle of the Meiji period a handsome moat ran along the south side of the grounds, and because worshippers crossed this moat to reach the shrine it was given the name Horikoshi, crossing the moat. Kubotsu Oji, the first of the Kumano Oji shrines, which once stood at Watanabe no Tsu in Hachikenya, is enshrined in the precincts. The shrine faces the busy Tanimachi-suji, but trees several hundred years old keep the grounds quiet. In Osaka it is said that Horikoshi-san will hear one wish in a lifetime, and the shrine has been close to people for a long time.
