About

Osaka Shochikuza opened in Taisho 12 (1923) in Dotonbori, in the Minami entertainment district, as Japan's first Western-style theatre, and marked a hundred years in 2023. In 1997 it was rebuilt and reopened as a theatre for the stage with current equipment, keeping the great Neo-Renaissance arch on the front that is its symbol. Kabuki, modern drama, revues, musicals and concerts are all performed here. The first floor is the lobby, the second holds shops, and the theatre hall occupies floors three to five. Red seats and walls and floors based on marble make a theatrical space set apart from everyday life.
