Osaka Museum of Housing and Living

The Osaka Museum of Housing and Living is inside the Osaka Municipal Housing Information Center building, which faces the Tenjinbashisuji shopping street at Tenjinbashi 6-chome in Kita-ku. It is a museum of the home, where the changes in Osaka's streets and dwellings from the Edo period through Meiji, Taisho and Showa can be experienced. Its centrepiece is a street of Osaka in the Tempo years (1830 to 1844), late in the Edo period, reconstructed from detailed research, with a device that changes the look of the town according to the hour. The themed decorations are changed with the seasons. Classical performing arts of the Kamigata region are staged in the tatami room, and there are events and workshops. Volunteer guides who call themselves the machiya-shu, the townhouse folk, show visitors around.
