Kyuhojibashi Bridge

Kyuhojibashi Bridge crosses the Higashi-Yokobori River and is one of the old bridges that date from Hideyoshi's time. One account traces the name to the temple Kyuhoji, said to have stood on the west side of the bridge; another to the many people from Kyuhoji village in Kawachi who moved here when the Dotonbori canal was dug in Keicho 7. In the Edo period it was a wooden bridge about 42 m long and 3.6 m wide, and on the east side was Zaimokuhama, where bamboo and timber were traded. The west side led into the centre of Semba and was close to Shinmachi and Dotonbori, so it was busy with komamono dealers selling accessories and other small goods and with the craftsmen who worked with them. The bridge today is a Gerber type (cantilever) reinforced concrete bridge 41.52 m long and 12.50 m wide, with three spans and two piers standing in between. The railings and other details are coloured deep green, and the lighting standards, plain in design, catch the eye.
