長堀橋

The first bridge built over the Nagahori River, which was cut in Kan'ei 2 (1625) to join the Higashi-Yokobori River with the Kizu River; the channel was about 2,500 m long and 30 to 40 m wide. With Shinsaibashi and Shinanobashi it was one of the bridges with an important part to play in Osaka, and all of them were kogi-bashi managed by the Edo shogunate. From the Meiji period the rivers began to be filled in, and the bridges of Osaka, once so many that people spoke of the eight hundred and eight bridges of Naniwa, gradually disappeared. Nagahoribashi was one of them. A monument stands there now, and the name lives on as the name of a subway station.
