Kuchinawazaka

Seven slopes in Tennoji-ku in Osaka, Shingonzaka, Genshojizaka, Kuchinawazaka, Aizenzaka, Kiyomizuzaka, Tenjinzaka and Osaka, are together called the Tennoji Nanazaka, the seven slopes of Tennoji. Kuchinawazaka, a quiet paved slope from Taiheiji to Matsuyamachi-suji, is said to be named either because the rise and fall of the road looks like a snake, kuchinawa, when seen from the bottom, or because the rope-laying for the building of Osaka Castle began here. At the top stands a stone carved with a passage from Ki no Miyako by the writer Oda Sakunosuke. Nearby, Joshunji holds the graves of the astronomer and calendar scholar Asada Goryu and the painter Tanomura Chikuden, and Taiheiji that of the physician Kitayama Juan, men active in the Edo period. Baikyuin has a memorial pagoda for Basho.
