Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum

The Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum stands on the corner site west of Hozenji and collects and shows ukiyo-e, chiefly actor prints of the popular players of the Bunka and Bunsei years in the late Edo period, among them Nakamura Utaemon III and Kataoka Nizaemon VII. It is a small museum of four floors, each about 60 square metres, and some thirty works from the collection are on show at a time. The fourth floor also displays the tools ukiyo-e were made with, and the entrance to the rest corner hangs a noren in the black, persimmon and light green of a kabuki draw curtain. The first floor is a shop of ukiyo-e goods. Where Edo ukiyo-e beautify and exaggerate, the Kamigata prints are realistic, drawing the stage sets and properties as carefully as the actors, which is said to let the life and manners of the time be read from them. The special displays are changed about every three months.
