About

In building a modern state, the new Meiji government judged that it had to repair the currency system left in disorder at the end of the Edo period, and it set up the Mint in Osaka to produce coins that would match those of the leading countries. The Mint held its opening ceremony on 4 April Meiji 4 (1871) and began striking coins with Western equipment that was groundbreaking for the time, which served to introduce modern industry to Japan in the early Meiji years.
