Ginzanji

Founded in 1591 as Daifukuji by Enyo Kyugan Shonin, the 24th head priest of Konkai Komyoji. Because the view to the west was no less fine than that of Kyozanji in China, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered that the temple's name be changed to Ginzanji. Handed down here are the Uho Doji said to have been Hideyoshi's personal image of protection, a portrait of Hideyoshi, a vermilion-seal battle order for the Kyushu campaign, and Omeshi Oboso, the straw sandals used only by emperors; some are kept at Osaka Castle. The wooden standing statue of Amida Nyorai from the time of the founding has shells stuck to the back of its right shoulder, which shows that it was raised from the sea. The present principal image is said to be the work of Eshin Sozu Genshin. Among the graves of well-known people are those of the haiku poet Okanishi Ichu, the joint mound of Ochiyo and Hanbei and the child she was carrying, and Yoshida Tamao I, the bunraku puppeteer and Living National Treasure. Cherry trees bloom in the grounds in spring.
