Shoman-in Temple

Prince Shotoku built Shoman-in in Suiko 1 (593) as the dispensary of Shitennoji. Aizen Myoo, known as a deity of matchmaking, was later enshrined here as the principal image, and the place came to be called Aizendo. Drinking the sacred water, Aizome no Reisui, is said to bring love about, and the grounds hold the sacred Aizen katsura tree that was the model for the film Aizen Katsura. The main hall, the kondo, is a designated cultural property of Osaka Prefecture, and the tahoto pagoda is the oldest wooden building in the city of Osaka and a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The Aizen Matsuri, held from 30 June to 2 July each year, is counted as one of Osaka's three great summer festivals and is widely known as the sign that summer has come to the city. Aizen Myoo is unveiled and night stalls line the grounds, which fill with worshippers.
