Momogaike Park

Momogaike Park was laid out by Osaka City in October of Showa 8 (1933) as a park surrounded by water and greenery. It is the largest park in the ward, about 71,500 square metres, and many people come to see the blossom when the peach and cherry trees flower. Momogaike pond is old, and the ground around it is designated by Osaka City as the Momogaike site, in use from the Yayoi period into the medieval age. The pond once connected to the Nekomagawa and was written Matagaike, crotch pond, after its shape. An Edo-period book records a legend of Prince Shotoku subduing a great serpent, and in the middle of the park Matagaike Myojin stands quietly, sheltered by large camphor and hackberry trees. In the pond is an island called Hebijima, snake island, where the natural growth has been left as it is.
