The church is closely tied to Momoyama Gakuin, founded in Meiji 17 (1884) by the Church Missionary Society of England in the Kawaguchi foreign settlement, now Kawaguchi in Nishi-ku. It began as a Bible study group of pupils and staff inside Momoyama Middle School. The group became the Momoyama Middle School congregation in Meiji 42 (1909) and the Momoyama mission church in Meiji 44 (1911). When Christian activity inside the school was forbidden in Taisho 6 (1917), it moved first to the headmaster's house and then to a building called the Shinsei Mission Hall. In Showa 2 (1927) that hall was moved next to Momoyama Middle School, the present site, and the mission church became Osaka St Andrew's Church. The moved building was badly damaged by the second Muroto typhoon in Showa 36 (1961), and the present chapel replaced it in Showa 39 (1964). It was repaired in Heisei 2 (1990) for the hundredth anniversary of the church. It also serves as the St Andrew's chapel of Momoyama Gakuin.
