Mint Museum

The Mint Museum occupies a building raised in Meiji 44 (1911) as a thermal power station, the only brick, Western-style building of the Meiji period left within the grounds of the Mint Bureau. In Showa 44 (1969), in order to conserve it and to open to the public the valuable coins the Bureau held and explain the work of minting, it was converted with its exterior left as it stood and opened as the Mint Museum. From Heisei 20 (2008), under the aims of a museum that is kind to people, mindful of the environment and worth looking at, the latest methods were brought into the displays and the facilities in a thorough rebuilding, and it reopened in April of Heisei 21 (2009).
