Shin-Kizugawa Bridge

The Kizugawa ferry runs between Funamachi 1-chome in Taisho Ward and Hirabayashi-kita 1-chome in Suminoe Ward, 238 m between the quays. From Showa 30 it operated as a car ferry able to carry anything from passenger cars to large trucks, but after Senbonmatsu Bridge opened upstream it now carries only people and bicycles. Shin-Kizugawa Bridge joins Taisho Ward and Suminoe Ward at the mouth of the Kizugawa River, and its full length reaches 2.4 km because a shipping channel 150 m wide and 46 m high has to be kept clear within the river. It is made up of the main bridge over the water, 495 m long and 11.25 m wide, and approach bridges on both banks. For the main bridge a half-through balanced arch was chosen, taking appearance into account as well as cost and ease of construction. It is among the largest bridges of this form in Japan and one of the bridges that represent the Port of Osaka. It received the Tanaka Award of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in Heisei 6.
