Senbonmatsu Bridge

The Senbonmatsu ferry links Minami-Okajima 1-chome in Taisho Ward with Minami-Tsumori 5-chome in Nishinari Ward, 230 metres between the quays. It is not clear in what year the Senbonmatsu crossing was set up, but it is thought to have been established for the first time in the middle of the Taisho era. It is still used as an important means of transport for commuters and students. In Showa 48 (1973) Senbonmatsu Bridge was completed between those two quays. Locally it goes by the nickname Megane-bashi, the glasses bridge. Clearance under the girders is 33 m so that large vessels can pass below, and the bridge measures 1,228 m including the two-level spiral rampways at each end.
