心眼寺

Shinganji was founded in the Bunroku years, late in the Azuchi-Momoyama period under Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It was pulled down after the winter siege and rebuilt in 1622, with help from the Unno, ancestors of the Sanada, on the site of the Sanada-maru fort, to hold memorial rites for Sanada Yukimura and his son Daisuke. The ground around the temple is where Yukimura built the fort called Sanada-maru and met the attack, on the south-east of Osaka Castle where the Uemachi plateau left the Toyotomi side thinly defended. The temple drew further attention because several men of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi, among them Katsura Hayanosuke, Watanabe Kichitaro and Takahashi Yasujiro, took part in the attack at the Omiya in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, in 1867 in which Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro were killed. The Mimawarigumi also fought at Toba-Fushimi, and those who died there are buried at Shinganji, where their graves remain.
