Oyosami Shrine

The shrine enshrines Taketoyohazurawake no Kimi, ancestral deity of the Yosami no Agohiko, a powerful family of the area at the time, together with the three Sumiyoshi deities. It is a shikinaisha, a shrine listed in the Engishiki, and in early times the court treated it as second only to Sumiyoshi Taisha. In front of the approach on the south side stands a monument marking the site of Yosami Pond, made in the 6th or 7th century and held to be the oldest in Japan, and a miyake, a farming estate held directly by the ancient court, stood in this area.
