Hongu Karasunomiya

In the early Kamakura period, on the 17th day of the 3rd month of Kenpo 2 (1214), in the reign of Emperor Juntoku, the clearing of Denpo, now Denpo-cho, began, and on the 25th day of the 4th month of Kenpo 3 (1215) the shrine was founded under its former name, Morisu Shrine, in prayer for the prosperity of the village, the port and the whole country. On the 19th day of the 2nd month of Bunroku 1 (1592), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi was about to sail, he prayed before the deity and received an oracle from the three-legged crow Yatagarasu, the messenger of the god, that it would guard the safety of his voyage. On departure he chose the priest Tanaka Hachidayu as pilot officer, and as foretold the Yatagarasu appeared and led the way, and under that guidance he returned safely on the 16th day of the 1st month of Bunroku 2 (1593). Hideyoshi was moved by this and is said to have changed the shrine's name to Karasunomiya. The main hall, worship hall, inner gate and openwork fence are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
