About
In Taika 1 (645) the Indian ascetic Hodo Sennin is said to have built a hermitage here, and the place is held to be where Buddhism first reached Japan. It is described as a training ground of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, the oldest ossuary site in Japan and a temple where the Shinto and Buddhist traditions are joined. Tenjin, Jizo, Kannon, Kobo Daishi and the dragon deity are worshipped here, and the Kannon pilgrimage of the three mountains of Denpozan, Koyasan and Mayasan began in the Heian period.
