Sakuya Konohana Kan

One of Japan's major comprehensive plant conservatories, inside Tsurumi Ryokuchi, the Expo '90 Commemorative Park. It was originally Osaka City's pavilion at EXPO '90, the International Garden and Greenery Exposition. The name Sakuya Konohana Kan was chosen by public competition at the time and is said to come from an old poem in the Kokin Wakashu: at Naniwazu these flowers bloom, asleep through the winter, now that spring is here these flowers bloom. Inside there are zones: a Flower Hall for exhibitions and concerts, a rainforest display with palms, banyan and other tropical plants, a tropical flowering tree room that recalls the scenery of Hawaii and Tahiti, a cactus and succulent room of plants from the dry lands of Africa and North and South America, an alpine plant room, a polar plant room with plants of the Arctic and Antarctic, an outdoor garden and an exhibition room, growing and showing 5,500 species and about 15,000 plants in all. The outside uses about 5,000 panes of glass and is modelled on a water lily floating on water. Events are held through the seasons.
