宝珠院 (大阪市)

A Shingon temple in Yorikimachi, also called Tenmanji. The temple's own history says Kukai founded it in Tencho 2 (825), east of the present site and facing the Okawa, on a wide precinct. Echo, the fourth abbot, was close to Sugawara no Michizane in the Jogan era (859-877), and Michizane is said to have called on his way to Dazaifu and sent a wooden image he had carved himself. In Oei 3 (1396) Emperor Go-Komatsu granted it the title Sugawarasan Tenmangu-ji. It was moved to the present site in the rebuilding after the winter and summer sieges of Osaka and flourished there, but almost every building burned in the air raids on Osaka in the Second World War. The present buildings date from Showa 42 (1967). The priests' quarters and the inside of the main hall are not open.
