Noe Suijin Shrine

Noe Suijin Shrine enshrines Mizuhanome no Okami and is generally known as Suijinsha, Suijin-sama, Suijingu or Noe Jinja. Tradition holds that when Miyoshi Masanaga built Enami Castle in 1533 the site suffered repeated flood damage, so a small shrine to a deity who guards against water and fire was put up inside the castle, and that this was its origin. The present hall was rebuilt in 1888, after the earlier one collapsed in the great flood of 1885. This is also the place where Enami sarugaku, an early performing art, began.
